Books, Books, Books

One of my favorite things to do is read.  I want to use this page to share with you what I am reading right now and books I have read in the past.  I would also really enjoy hearing about what you are reading.  Please send me a comment about a great book you have read or a book you are currently reading.  I will add your comments and book recommendations to this page to be shared with your classmates and teachers.  I’m so excited to hear about what you are reading… there is nothing better than discovering another great book!

What Mrs. Manninen is Reading…

wednesday-wars.jpg  The Wednesday Wars by Gary D. Schmidt

Seventh grader Holling Hoodhood has a tough year ahead of him. First of all, his teacher Mrs. baker, keeps giving him the evil eye. Second of all, the class bully keeps threatening to do Number 167 (and you don’t even want to know what Number 167 is). Third of all, his father keeps calling him the Son Who is Going to Inherit Hoodhood and Associates. But things are changing, and while reciting his favorite curses from Shakespear’s plays, Holling might just find the true meaning of his own story. (www.barnesandnoble.com)

It’s just a small story really, about among other things: a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist-fighter, and quite a lot of thievery. . . .

Set during World War II in Germany, Markus Zusak’s groundbreaking new novel is the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can’t resist–books. With the help of her accordion-playing foster father, she learns to read and shares her stolen books with her neighbors during bombing raids as well as with the Jewish man hidden in her basement before he is marched to Dachau.  (www.barnesandnoble.com)
