  1. Yes! I have obtained the first blog (hopefully) for A Farewell to Arms. I loved this novel. It was one of my favorites of all time.

I thought it was quite interesting about how the doctors told Catharine to drink alcohol to keep the baby small. It just shows how far medicine has come since the First World War. Also, the fact that the baby died brought tears to my eyes and when Catharine past away also.

Rain was also a very strong symbol in the novel I noticed. I am also wondering if “Catharine’s hair” is a symbol. I also noticed that in the beginning of the novel Hemingway has a different writing style it almost seemed as if nothing bad ever happened. It just seemed like the war was going on, but the soldiers were not too worried about the war. The soldiers were more worried about getting drunk.

Look forward to more posts soon!

  2. Yes! One book down and only two to go! To start off i want to say that this novel was very interesting.

Looking at the other comment posted before mine, i can see that many strong points that stood out to me also caught the eye of different readers.

One point in the book that really caught my eye and made me think about war today was when Passini explained to Henery why the war was not going to stop anytime soon. One strong line that sticks with me is this, ” There is no finish to a war.”

All in all, this book was worth the time it took to read!

  3. A Farewell to Arms is a great novel. This is novel is very interestingto learn from the previous years of technolgy and such. The reading logs are coming very good.

The medicine used is so interesting to hear or learn about. From which they had then and we have now. During the war it rainied several times, and continues

I looked forward to reading the books

    Also then next posts!

  4. I’am so excited I have completed this novel. This book has such a great complex, it’s such a great book. I have left a comment already, I’am leaving another one to show how much I enjoyed the book.

The information that was given, and I was informed of in this book, has taught me several different things.

The different medicine used during the pregancy is amazing, and to see how far our medicine and technology have come. Drinking during pregancy should never be done, as we know now, just to make the baby smaller.

I’am looking forward to reading the two other books!

  5. I thought Farewell to Arms was an ok novel. It was different from what I usually read, but it was exciting enough that it kept my attention.
I never really read any books that took place from the point of view of a soldier in WWI so it was interesting to see what life was like for them. Sad to say for me, I didn’t know his name until chapter 10. I kept thinking it was Tenente because thats what everyone was calling him.
I’d have to say my favorite character would have been Rinaldi. I think he is rather funny….but the typical womanizer. I also liked Catherine too. She was just so devoted to Henry, willing to do anything for him. She truly shows that she loves him a lot.
Well overall I seemed to enjoy this book at the exciting parts.

  6. Wow I’m finally done with this book! It took me a while to get into it, but towards the end I didn’t want to stop reading. I was really proud of myself because I found a symbol: rain. I found so many places where it mentioned rain randomly sandwiched in between sentences or right before something bad happened. Rain is an archetype for death or sadness. The last sentence of the book mentions Henry walking home in the rain right after Catherine dies. Anyway, I’m excited to start on the other two books, and I enjoyed A Farewell to Arms even though it definitely wasn’t my favorite book in the world.

  7. The ending of this book threw me off completely. I could not believe what I was reading. But, that is what I like in books, surprises. A Farewell to Arms was a real eye opener for me. It made me realize how real and grusome the war was. Those intense battle scenes sent shivers down my spine. This novel maybe fictional but it represented millions of men who were real and who lived this day to day. I loved this novel as a whole. In the beginning I never thought that Henry and Catherine’s relationship would last, but I am so glad that it did.. But, I have to agree with Tracy, Rinaldi was my favorite character. He just lightened up the entire novel, in my point of view. He was just a funny and friendly man in genral. I am glad that we had to read this selection. This book has now worked it’s way onto my favorites list.

  8. I wasn’t too excited to learn that I was going to have to read a Hemingway novel, but this book proved me wrong. I really enjoyed reading this novel more than I thought I would. Typically, when reading war novels, they are always about one hero and how successful he was. I really like this book because it wasn’t like that. The novel vividly shows the struggles and pains of war. Men just like the ones in the story actually had to live in those conditions and struggle daily to keep positive about the war. It was easy to agree with Henry’s opinions about glory and honor because he had a strong arguement. This novel was a story of leaving the war behind mentally and physically but it was also about love. Hemingway blended these two things into one story seamlessly.

  9. I did not enjoy this book and strongly disliked the ending. I know that life during WWI- or any war for that matter isn’t going to be easy, but Henry had everything going against him. At last I thought Cathrine and Henry would be happy together. They had a lovely home and loved to spend time together. So when Catherine and her son died in childbirth, I was quite shocked and disappointed. A Farewell to Arms did show me the hardships of war, which I feel everyone should realize. This wasn’t my favorite novel and not anywhere near my top ten, but it was well written and had a very fine story line.
I did enjoy how dedicated Henry was to Catherine. Every time he would be away from the front or have convalescent leave he would return for her. They were so much in love and it was wonderful to see their relationship grow as hardship fell upon them.

  10. Ah, “A Farewell to Arms,” possibly my most anticipated read of the summer. And rightfully so! This was my favorite book of the three I read. It was focused around a war, which always adds to a novel; it also had romance in it, which i think most people enjoy; and it had Italians, and what else is there to say about that.
The book had a lot of quotes, which really makes one stop and think about war. One of the best was, “There is nothing worse than war.” When I read this, I stopped, and tried to think of something to compromise the quote, being the argumentative person I am. The only thing that came to mind was disease and sickness. But although those are both horrible, and kill many people, I wasn’t quite sure if they killed as many as war.
A symbol in the book? The weather? I did notice that it rained most of the time bad things happened.
The real shocker was when Both Catherine and the baby died in childbirth. I was disappointed. I would have enjoyed it more if the baby had lived and Catherine had died.

  11. I thought A Farewell to Arms was pretty interesting. Overall, I liked it. There were definately some slower parts and, a lot of vocabulary but, overall it was a good book. I enjoyed this one more then the first book i read, Peace Like a River. There were a lot of military words and italian phrases that had to be looked up along the way, but that wasn’t too bad. I liked the story line and I liked that I could relate the book to my life, or my family’s life. Ecspecially the military aspect of it. Now, I’m on to read Travels With Charley before school starts!

  12. A Farewell to Arms was the last book I read of the three. It was probably the worst one of them all. It was very slow moving and there were to many details about everything. I didn’t enjoy the war sections of the book. The romance part of it made the story better. I did like how it would rain every time something bad was happening. That is why Catherine said she didn’t like the rain. That made it a little more interesting.
I think that Catherine and Henry were together a lot. They did love each other A LOT but it was like they were obsessed with each other. They didn’t even want to see their friends or families.
I didn’t like the ending either. I thought one of them would die, but not both. I thought it was weird that Henry didn’t care about the baby at all.
Overall the book wasn’t one of my favorites but, I enjoyed reading it.

  13. I thought that this was a pretty good book. It wasn;t necessarily my favorite, but I didn’t hate it either. As I read the book, I found it to be kind of dull and possibly boring at times. As I kept reading though things definately improved and I found it much easier to read.

I became intrigued with all the things that are involved with war. I had no idea how strict some of the people were, like when Frederic was going to be taken under arrest for losing his men. I found it rediculous and kind of scary. I can just hope that doesnt’t happen nowadays.

I would also have to say that althought the ending was sad, it was unexpected and sometimes a reader needs a little surprise to make the book satisfactory.

  14. A Farewell To Arms was the last book I read. I thought that it was a pretty easy read and found that I finished it rather quickly. I liked how they had a love story in with the war. Even though we know that many of the men fell in love while they were away at war. This book was not a typical war book. There wasn’t alot of fighting scenes in the book and it wasn’t all blood and guts which I thought it would have. The men never seemed to scared of the war except for when they got hurt. In the beginning I wasn’t really sure that Henry was in love with Catherine but after he got hurt and was in the hospital with her their relationship changed. The end of the book was the worst part. I think we all expected them to have a healthy baby and they would live the rest of their lives together. Overall I thought this book was good.

  15. This book took me a long time to get into, but once I did I found it almost impossible to put it down. I love how Hemingway made the novel follow the classic love story and then he twisted it around to make it more interesting. “A Farewell to Arms” gave me the feeling that every relationship should be shown as strongly as Catherine and Fred’s.

Although I had to look up a few of the Italian phases, looking them up made me have to understand what i was reading. I found this to be my favorite of the three that I chose.

  16. A Farewell to Arms… an interesting read indeed. When I read the summary on the back of the book, I thought, “Great, a girl book, exactly what I wanted to read.” I have proven myself wrong and feel embarrassed for even having that thought.

A common theme that I read throughout the book was war. War did not only ravage and destroy villages and towns, it also plagued the many civilians involved with the war. Each one of them tried to distract themselves from what was going on. Rinaldi acted as if he was in love with every pretty girl he met and Henry and Catherine played their little “game” with each other. All attempts to draw their minds away from the unforgiving war.

Rain was an obvious symbol from the moment Catherine mentioned how it scared her. Rain represented death, sadness, and fear. Catherine cried when it rained with her and Henry claiming it was tough on love (a foreshadowing to her eventual death) and it rained after Catherine’s death.

With this book done, I’m now finished with all three books! Time to tackle the last day of summer with fun in the sun!

  17. “A Farewell to Arms” was not my favorite book but it was okay. I like how Hemingway tells a realistic story about war and trying to escape it with someone you care for. I didn’t like how Henry was a hypocrite, he shoots two workers trying to escape and he kills them. Later when he finds out that the Italians are killing their officers, he runs away fearing he’d be killed too. I also don’t think he would have been able to support his wife and child. He wasn’t known for his honesty, and he was also a drunk. I also like the way Hemingway chose to make it rain at the end of the story.

  18. This novel was an interesting novel for me. I was never very into learning about history and with this taking place in another country it was especially difficult to follow in some parts.
As I read past the halfway point and towards the end, I grew to become more involved in the book and when I finished, I teared up a little.
Some of the the events that occurred in the novel I had to research to understand what I had just read.
It was not hard for me to figure out what the symbol was in this novel, for every time it rained the happiness retreated from the novel.
But overall, I enjoyed this novel and plan on doing more research to understand books like this in the future.

  19. I didn’t enjoy A Farewell to Arms as much as the other two books I read. It took me a while to actually get into the book because it was hard for me to stay interested in it. I did, however, enjoy the love story behind Mr. Henry and Catherine, but I did not like the parts about the war.

Hemingway has a very interesting, and sometimes even confusing, style of writing. The long dialogues between the characters were confusing because Hemingway sometimes wouldn’t put who was saying what. I got off track trying to read some of the dialogues.

Even though I did not care for this novel that much, I can admit that I did learn some things from it. For example, I never knew that doctors actually gave women alcohol to make their babies smaller. I thought that was pretty interesting.

  20. the book was great i like how the author played with the mood of the main character. why does he say he’s not religous, but call out to him in a few instences. the ending made things a little complicated, but i guess he had to end the book with a little bit of comedy and greif.

  21. A Farewell to Arms was an interesting book. Frederic and Catherine surprised me many times. I also found that it rained a lot too. When I found out Catherine was pregnant it threw me of a little. Catherine acted really weird too, because she was always very submissive to him. She said that whatever he wanted was what she wanted. Then when She and the baby died at the end confused me a ton. I don’t know why she had to die but I’m sure Earnest Hemingway had a good reason because it was a pretty good book.
