Travels with Charley - Posting Spot

Steinbeck is famous for his novels The Grapes of Wrath and East of Eden, but this work of nonfiction is just as good as some of his best works of fiction. Post your thoughts about it here. Make sure you at least fill the box.

I could not resist posting in response to this book. Steinbeck will always be one of my favorite writers, and Travels with Charley will always be one of my favorite reads. Half of the time while reading the book, I’d forget that Charley’s a dog because of how Steinbeck refers to him. Whe’n I’m 60, (and that’s closer than it used to be), I’d like to take another cross-country trip. Now, I’m not fond of poodles, so maybe I can take a schnauzer? I’m glad you folks are reading this one. Try Blue Highways by William Least Heat-Moon.
I can say with complete honesty that I am loving this book with the turn of each page. The way that Steinbeck uses metaphors makes his book sing. One main thing that attracted me to this book was its cover. I liked that he put his most prized possession and very best friend on the cover, with himself. I am only about half way through with Travels with Charley and I find myself laughing out loud every other page. As it turns out John Steinbeck is pretty funny, well in his writing at least. =] I can’t wait to finish this book, it’s becoming one of my favorites.
This turned out to be a really good book. John Steinbeck is very clever and his word choice makes things interesting. He is also thoughtful and said many things that are true but I just haven’t ever noticed before. I was worried that Charley might die when he got sick and I can’t imagine how that would have affected Steinbeck’s trip. I find myself wishing I could take a journey cross country and really keep my eyes open to the people like Steinbeck did instead of just seeing the scenery or attractions. It was an easier read than I anticipated because it held my interest.
This was surpisingly a very good book. I thought it was going to be boring but, I enjoyed it more then all the other books I’ve read for this class. I loved how the author used so many details and how he talked about things that normal people wouldn’t really think about in daily life. Also, I loved that it really made me think about a lot off things about the country and the people in it. I’m really glad I read this book. Also, I think that it was a good book to end the summer with because it was an easier read but, like I’ve said still interesting for me.
i really thought this book was boring until the end. great information and colorful writting. i like how Steinbeck plays this old guy role when he needed something. the ending was very funny. over all i like the book.
While reading this book I find myself see the places John goes through his descriptions of the landscape. Charley seems like a very loyal dog as well. I like his personanlity too. When I read about John buying Rocinante I thought it was a little unusual to buy that kind of a car, but as I continued reading I could see why he bought it. As I read I saw that John steinbeck uses some long sentences when he is describing something, but use short choppy sentences in his diologue with another person. Overall I am enjoying this book.
