I am about seventy five percent finished with Go Tell it on the Mountain thus far, and I have to say that it is quite an intruiging novel. One thing that I particularyly like is the seperated chapters about the main characters. I like that because I feel it is important to get a lot of background on the characters that you are reading about. I have some unique thoughts about this novel and I am eager to share them with my seminar group tomorrow!
Well I am completely finished with our novel, Go Tell it on the Mountain, and I really enjoyed it. I’ll think back to the beginning of the novel for this blog so I have more to write about later. I remember thinking that John was possessed by the devil, which turns out not being true. It really seemed like it to me though because his father always referred to him as the son of the devil. There are a lot of biblical references and allusions that are important to the theme and symbols. We have to remember this for our project and use it!
If any of you ladies get on between now and Friday I just want to remind you that we are taking notes on the characters this week (specifically what might go on during the presentation). Sarah and I talked about it, and I think I am going to write about Gabe and everyone else can talk about who they are doing in last hour. See you all Friday! =)
My favorite chapter of the novel was Gabriel’s Prayer. I thought it was very ironic how he is constantly telling John about sinning, and then he cheated on his first wife. I also realize now why Gabe acted so different to John. He really isn’t John’s father. I didn’t realize at first that Gabe married Elizabeth after she had John.
All of the characters were confusing at first for me, but now I think everything is straightened out. Another ironic thing is that Gabe was just like John when he was younger. Like John, Gabe didn’t want to be saved and he protested againt being baptized.
I definitely think that Religion is a major theme in Go Tell it on the Mountain. Everyone has a different opinion about religion. Gabe is a really religious man, while Aunt Florence and John are the complete opposite.
I also think that the title is very important. For most of the novel, John does not believe in the Lord. It seems like he wants people to know him for that. Also, at the end when he is saved it seems like he wants the world to know of his faith. Both things can be seen as information that John wishes to “tell on a mountain.” He makes his family and friends know how he is feeling and what his beliefs are in both situations.
The end of the novel really surprised me. At first, I didn’t know what was going on. I remember telling my group members that I thought John was in hell, which I did actually think. The way it said that John “was looking up at them” I just assumed he was in hell.
I didn’t guess that he would become a follower of the Lord. He seemed so set on hating his dad and his beliefs. It was a complete turn around for John. He was a complete different person from the start to finish of the novel.
Well, my group had our first outside of seminar metting this afternoon and I have to say that I think it went pretty darn well. We shared our character analysises, discussed possible themes, tones, ect, made a few props for our presentation. We have come up with some really good ideas so far and I really excited to see how our presentation turns out in the end. We are hoping to have our rough, rough draft done one week from today and start rehearsing. Good luck to all of the other groups!!
We had yet another seminar meeting today and I believe that it went very well. Kayla and I shared our opinions about the scenes we have written, we all also discussed how we could start and finish our presentation. We have an out of school seminar meeting again on sunday. The first one went pretty well. I am hoping the same for this one. Wish us luck!!
I just finished writing my scenes for our script. I am looking forward to when our presentation is all finished and finally put together. I belive that we do have some very good ideas and a unique view on the novel as a whole. I hope you are looking forward to seeing our presentation when it is all finihsed!
At the beginning of this book I was a little confused as to what was going through John’s mind, because he acted a little wierd. Then when he was cleanig the church one day I could see it. He wrestled with himself, and the decision to be saved or not. I also found Gabe to be something he wasn’t known to be, because he beat his children. Roy was the child Gabe liked most, and when I found out why I was very surprised. This book was very interesting and I liked it a lot.
The story grew more interesting as Florence told her story through her prayer. Her mother favored Gabe because he was a boy. Gabe received thye schooling, and Florence stayed home and took care of him.
Religion plays a big part in this book because Gabe is considered a great person in the church, and John is expected to become a preacher, but he doesn’t want to be.
Elizabeth is an interesting character. She is Gabe second wife, but she became pregnant with John by, what was supposed, her first huband, but she didn’t want to push Richard into marriage by telling him she was pregnant. Her first husband Richard commited suicide because he was accused of a crime didn’t commit. but he was set free, so I do not know why he did it.
Our Presentation is coming together I cannot wait to get it all put together and see the sets that Kayla and Sarah made . I’m sure they look great girls. THis book had a lot of symbols, so we did not really have a problem with that part.
The book did have a wierd ending, like Kayla said, but I am glad that John finally made his decision to get saved. I am really excited about the presentation, because it is one I do not have to do by myself. I can’t wait to fully hear what all of our scripts sound like together.
