Literacy Connections with Ms. Tobin

Improving Reading through Fluency, Decoding, Sight Words, Comprehension Skills and plenty of Rewards!

Students are being asked to choose a book for their final Book Talk of the year. Students need to pick out a book of interest to them (any genre will do!), read the book, answer some basic questions, and present their information to their classmates. To view or print a list of the Book Talk questions, click: book-talk-questions.pdf

All 3rd Trimester Book Talks are Due by May 25th.

All students are required to read a book of their choice and present the book to the class. By listening to recommendations from our peers, we often find the best books to read! Therefore all students must fill out a “thinking” worksheet so they can supply their listeners with valuable information about the book they are presenting. Students may present as they are ready; they need to make an appointment with Ms. Tobin so their presentation can be added to the schedule.

For the 2nd Trimester all Book Talks are due before February 27th. See Ms. Tobin to schedule a date to present. Please click the link below to view/print a copy of the Book Talk questions.

Where did October go? It has been a month devoted to establishing base line data through ”testing” from students. All students in Literacy Connections have participated in Fall assessments in the areas of reading comprehension, decoding, sight words, spelling, and reading fluency.  None of these assessments were graded for report cards, but scored to give teachers a complete picture of students’ ability levels in reading. Of course, students have participated in MEAP testing as well.

So now we are down to business! Each week students are expected to participate and complete the following activities:

  • Establish a list of sight words to study for the week
  • Complete one lesson in their decoding workbooks called Rewards
  • Complete two timed fluency passage readings
  • Sustained Silent Reading in a novel of their choice
  • Complete one vocabulary or spelling activity

Students will rarely be assigned homework other than reading in their novels because most of the activities we do are participation based activities. Therefore, it is very important that students attend class as regularly as possible.

This year the Related Arts classes are scheduled a bit differently. 6th and 7th grade will meet with both Related Arts classes every day for approximately 42 minutes  in each class. The 8th grade meets on an A-day/B-day rotation with each class approximately 88 minutes long. So Monday is always an A-day, Tuesday is a B-Day, Thursday is an A-Day, and Friday is a B-day.

Wednesdays are Delayed Start days.  Therefore, students do not start school until 9:00 on Wednesday mornings. Students see all Related Arts teachers on these days for approximately 35 minutes per class. In Literacy Connections, Wednesdays are designated as our silent reading days so all students should have a book to read with them each Wednesday.
