District Success
March 28th, 2010 by ksix
Keideesha did a spectacular job at Districts. She was surrounded by an entourage of supporters from the SpellMasters who cheered both quietly and loudly in claps when appropriate. Of 22 students narrowed from a field of 30,000 students, she managed to stay in the competition until there were a mere 5 contestants. In fact, this field of contestants was so skilled, they actually ran out of Spell It words and moved to dictionary words. Keideesha received the last Spell It level word.
She did amazingly well and we’re very proud of her hard work. Congratualtions Keideesha. Of course, we have other competitors in the wings vying for next year’s Districts spot too. Keideesha has another year to compete and she will be fighting hard against other 7th graders and even our up and coming 5th and 6th graders in our group. Our SpellMasters are prepared and hard working. We expect to give Nationals one of Fruitport’s finest next year.

If the number of rounds is an indication of the skill of our regional contestants this year, then we had some mighty skilled spellers. It took 1 and 1/2 hours into 33 rounds to finally declare Keideesha Gordon (Fruitport) our winner. She went 6 rounds with Alexandria from Orchard View before Keideesha won on cachet.
We are very proud of all of our spellers for making this such an exciting event. Even our audience could be audibly heard responding with soft “oohs” and “ahhhs” while spellers spelled successfully. Coming in a close third was Conner Addicott of Fruitport middle school.
Our favorite highlight…”Stibble?” (Hailey), “no Stipple”(pronouncer), “Stibble?” (Hailey), “no, Stipple” (pronouncer), “Stipple? Like with a P?” (Hailey), (crowd erupts in laughter), “I wish I could tell you that, but I can’t” (pronouncer) (more audience laughter), “ohhhh, stipple?” (Hailey), “yes, Stipple” (pronouncer).
In spite of the fact that Hailey went down on Stipple, she did spell androcentric correctly and of course, we can’t forget that Conner it seemed, got the entire Spanish selection of words and they were all food. It was a great deal of fun, even though we were a whole lot hungrier after.
Next meeting, Monday, March 8th. Don’t forget permission slips if you plan to got to Districts to watch Keideesha. Our next bee is the Lakes 8 on the 15th. Our final local bee date and time will be announced later. That’s a trophy earning bee, so be there.

Welcome back to school. We are looking forward to a busy and fun 2010. Students should be studying French, Latin, Asian, and Spanish words so far. Our next meeting is Monday the 11th. We will go over the rest of Latin tips, Spanish tips and of course, practice.
Many students will be getting their new T-shirts. Make sure you wear them to the local on the 25th. Hopefully students studied to earn their popcorn and pop.
Please look for a parent note coming home after Monday’s meeting. If your child cannot attend, please e-mail Mrs. Miller or Mrs. Six to get a copy. See you Monday.
