2009 Football Season - Things To Get Done

With the new year there is much to be done to get ready for the 2009 Varsity Football Season.

1. See Coach Wilson about your game number. This would be for upcoming Juniors or new players to the program.

2. Make sure you are requesting Strength and Speed as an elective class for next year.

3. GET IN THE WEIGHT ROOM! If you do not have Strength and Speed currently and are not out for a Winter sport, you should be in the weight room after school on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

No Weight Room over Holiday Break

The weight room will be closed over the Christmas (Holiday) Break. The weight room will be open after school when school resumes on January 5th. Enjoy the holidays!

Trojans build another wheelchair ramp

On Saturday, December 13th, several members of the football team donated time to build another wheelchair ramp. This group of fine young men braved to cold and snow and built a ramp for Mr. Patrick Porter (who is the grandfather of one of our freshman players, PJ Dupont). Team members taking part are; Matt Gibbs, Zach Fortenbacher, Lance Gilbert, Ryan Nickisch, Cody Carmean, PJ Dupont, Zach Workman, Mario Flores, and Raymond Bowne. Special thanks to some of our coaching staff for giving up part of their weekend. They are; Coach Ybarra, Coach Vargas, Coach Flores, and Coach Six.

2008 Adopt-a-player Program

For the 8th year the varsity football players took part in the “adopt-a-player” program. Individual players were “adopted” by elementary classrooms and once a week they visited them and took part in classroom activities. Players helped give spelling tests, read to the class, went to gym, played at recess, and helped out in the classroom any way they were needed. A big thank-you to all of the elementary teachers who took part. They were: Joy Johnson, Linda Beimers, Sarah Dubey, Opal Powers, Rachel Brown, Donna Burns, Gay Cole, Kelsey Cooper, Julie Ferguson, Jill Smith, Angie Dietz, Mindy Freeland, Debra Olson, Vella Caruso, Katie Danicek, Brenda Brandow, Jill Brott, Rochelle Zimmerman, Bobbie Wash, Mary Drake, Ann Blais, John McCollum, Marcia Kitchka, Brian Meagher, Nicole Mitchelson, Melissa Schouman, Rachel Sanders, Ron Sweet, and Kelly Holder.

Football Team Sings National Anthem

Choir Teacher, Sarah Bowmen, thought it would be a great idea for the football team to sing the National Anthem before one of the high school’s athletic events. She had to first convince Coach Wilson that the boys could do it, then she had to see if enough of the players would take it seriously and be willing to put in the extra time to do it. More than half the team said they would like to take part! They started in the beginning of September and stayed after practice one day a week to work with Ms. Bowmen. Finally, on Thursday, October 9th, before the volleyball game between Fruitport and Tri-County, 30 of the varsity football players walked into the gym and sang the National Anthem with pride and dignity.

The team would like to thank Ms. Bowmen for not only her time and effort, but also for believing in them.

2008 Wheelchair Ramp Project

Several members of the Varsity Football Team donated part of their weekend to build a wheelchair ramp on Saturday, September 27th. The ramp was built for Judy Hiemstra, who is the mother of one of our Edgewood elementary teachers, Kathy Six.

The builders where; Wade Ackerson, DeAngelo Beane, Kevin Fortier, Dominic McFee, Logan Closs, Mike Hall, Rodger Scott, Jared Rickert, Bill Burns, Matt Gibbs, Evan Kamp, and Coach Josh Fri.

Nice Job men!

2008 Spirit Order Form

Make sure your information is clearly written and indicate if you want name and number on the back of sweatshirt orders, and number on the front of orders for shorts and sweatpants.

Scrimmage information

All three levels (Varsity, JV, and Freshman) will be traveling to Grand Rapids Kenowa Hills High School on Thursday, August 21st for this year’s scrimmage. The JV and Freshman will start at 2:00 PM on the practice fields and the varsity will start at 5:00 PM in the stadium. Schools attending will be Fruitport, Kenowa Hills, Ottawa Hills, and Whitehall.

Check Calendar for Changes

Go to Online Calendar on the right to see schedule changes. Varsity Conditioning/Weight Lifting will continue from 6:30 - 8:30 AM. JV / Freshman will condition from 6:00 - 7:30 PM.

Varsity Practice will start on August 11th and run from 7:00 - 11:30 AM.

JV / Freshman practice will start on August 11th and run from 8:00 - 11:30 AM.

This schedule will run until Friday, August 22nd, with the exception of the Scrimmage on Thursday, August 21st.

The week of Monday, August 25th, practice will change to 3:00 - 6:00 PM. JV/Freshman will travel to Reeths Puffer on Wednesday, August 27th, and the Rockets varsity visiting Fruitport on Thursday, August 28th.

There will be practice on Monday, August 28th (Labor Day) from 3:00 - 6:00 PM.

School starts on Tuesday, August 29th and practice will move to after school from 3:15 - 6:40 PM daily.

2008 Golf Outing Rescheduled

The Golf Outing at Terra Verde has been rescheduled to Saturday, August 2nd. Start time will be 8:00 AM. A letter will be sent out to all team captains with additional information. If you cannot participate on that date, you will be given a full refund.
